The casual but classy diner that never sleeps is coming to Memorial City next month.

Katz’s, the 24-hour sandwich specialty shop, is opening its fifth Houston area location at 10321 Katy Freeway, on Sept. 2, according to a news release.

Whether it’s a pot roast or French dip, Katz’s has been serving up stacked specialty sandwiches and more since 1979, when owners Barry and Lisa Katz wanted to bring a New York-style deli to the Lone Star State.

The new restaurant opening will be preceded by a charity event which will double as a soft opening to the public on Aug. 31 with 100 percent of the day’s proceeds going to the Kerr County Flood Relief Fund, a support project that aids ongoing recovery and relief efforts following the July 4 flooding.

Katz’s started in Austin. In 2000, Houstonians craving its signature upscale diner aesthetic finally got a taste at the chain’s Montrose location, offering a new traditional deli-style offering and sandwich culture in the city amid the heavy traffic of barbecue and Tex-Mex options.

“It’s a dream come true to bring our upscaled 24-hour dining experience to a fifth Houston-area location,” said Barry Katz, owner and namesake of the iconic Texas restaurant chain, in a statement. “We strive to be the industry leader in food quality, service and ambiance, and can’t wait to Never Klose our doors again.”

The “Katz’s Never Kloses” tagline added that around-the-clock New York City flavor to its identity and restaurants in the Woodlands, Heights and Galleria areas followed.

The Memorial City restaurant will bring Katz’s traditional foodie favorites, plus breakfast all day, dessert, and cocktails and milkshakes.
